Black/White
Another story vignette: an unnamed character awakens in a hotel room, next to a woman's dead body. He is amnesiac, bloodied, and soon pursued by a legion of black-clad security forces.
Possible themes:
- the nature of conciousness. Is he human just because he believes himself to be (i.e. could he actually be an android) ?
- the undependable nautre of memory. Perhaps he reconstructs his 'memory' based on what others tell him ? For example, based on what the girl in red tells him. He meets her (providentially, it seems) and she seems to remember him from a previous meeting, helps him escape for a while.
But why does she seem to know one or more of the black-clad men chasing him ? And are the little vignettes she feeds him about how (and where) they met - and the clues she drops about who he may have been - to be trusted ?
Is he remembering, or building a new memory ? Are the acts of violence he commits in his depseration to remain free, justified ? Did he, in fact, kill that woman in the hotel room ?
Maybe there are two sets of pursuers, one (led by unnamed character's brother) trying to save him, the other trying to capture and imprison him (the security forces).
Will need a plausible, signal event which would cause both forces to converge simultaneously on the hotel room.
Why does our character have such violent, aggressive tendencies ? Why was his brother always coming to his aid, as he is now ?
Ah, a setup ! The brother's rival (within the security forces) has set up our character to take a fall, in hopes of shunting the brother aside and derailing him from the fasttrack to a key management position in the covert agency.
Can you remake yourself into someone new if your memory is erased, or are you what you are forever ?
When is this fable set ? In the near future ?
May need to research etymology of future words (e.g. jumpsuit for antigrav pack ?).
