George Tenet says goodbye

Well, it wasn't entirely unexpected that George Tenet resigned yesterday, and despite news reports to the contrary, neither is the timing of the announcement, really. I doubt anyone seriously expected him to serve beyond November in the event of a Bush re-election. He carries serious baggage after presiding over a host of widely reported - and criticized - intelligence failures (Chinese embassy bombing in the Bosnian war, USS Cole bombing, September 11, the WMD debacle, ...). And while Bush wouldn't stand to have him resign under pressure, this was perhaps the only lull in the storm he could count on to announce his decision without being seen to ... resign under pressure. He's probably a great guy, but Bush needs his own guy at the top. After he gets re-elected, of course !
